Origin and History: The original Lion Capital was part of a pillar erected by Emperor Ashoka in Sarnath (near Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh) around 250 BCE to mark the site of Buddha's First Sermon. It was adopted as the State Emblem of India on January 26, 1950, the day India became a republic.
Symbolism of the Lions: The four Asiatic lions, standing back-to-back, symbolize power, courage, pride, and confidence. While four are present in the original capital, only three are visible in the 2D representation used as the National Emblem.
Usage: The National Emblem is a crucial symbol of India's sovereignty, used on official documents, currency, passports, and by various government bodies and officials.
